Yes, you own your home (deed is in your name and is recorded in public records) and the mortgage is a lien. Think about your car, you own it (titled to you) but the bank has a loan with the car as collateral. Well, the mortgage is a loan using the property as collateral.
Hope this helps and good luck with your college!

how is the question asked? You need to say clearly on there. I am detailed so I add all the additional info and let them determine what exactly they want to put on their data computer screen. If the question is "do you own your own home" I’d respond "yes, me and the bank" or respond "mortgage". Usually on applications like for credit they ask "do you own or rent"…so the answer would be clear that if your name is not on the lease then you rent. But if you’re living with parents then say so.
