parents – what would you do if you suddenly inherited eight million dollars?

how would you spend it? and let’s all remember that four million goes immediately to taxes… so we’re really looking at how you would spend four million dollars.

i think i would start off by buying my family’s dream home – a beautiful older house right off the lake – and paying off the mortgage in full. where i’m at that would probably cost me a solid $500,000 – $600,000. i would then use the remaining $500,000 or so to completely and beautifully furnish the interior.

the second million would have to be spent on my children’s education. i would set aside a good $100,000 per child… probably four different accounts, because although we only have two right now, with that kind of money we’d be able to afford four. the remaining $600,000 would be spent on new vehicles… probably a subaru for my husband and a honda for me. then we’d have to get a boat… hubby loves to fish, and it would be great for the kids.

i would take $100,000 to spend on new clothes and other necessities for the kids and hubby and i… then put a remaining $400,000 in a savings account to collect dust. always a good idea to have a nice back up pool just in case god forbid something happens to one of the kids or something.

the remaining million and a half i’d give away, although probably not traditionally. i would donate some to my favorite charities… i would want to help fund education for girls around the globe, give money to operation christmas child, some to the inner-city soup kitchens. but the rest i would give away anonymously to people who i know needed it.

how bout you?

I would buy a nice, decent sized house. I would pay it off in full upon buying, no mortgage for me! Then we would probably buy my parents and my in laws a house as well, as they are all apartment living and not liking it much. That would probably work out to approx. $1,500,000 since a decent house costs about $500,000 around here.

Spend about $50,000 furnishing the house.

Put $300,000 away for college for my daughter and any future children (my limit would be 3 kids).

Top up every ones wardrobes and necessities, costing probably $100,000.

Pay off our car and buy another new car for myself, costing approx. $50,185 (for remainder of our car and the one we still want)

Buy a boat, he likes fishing as well. That would probably cost about $90,000 for one we would like.

Put $1,000,000 into savings.

Give the remaining $909,815 to various charities.

That’s my whole $4,000,000 spent!

well… in canada i wouldn’t loose half of it to taxes… sucks to be you guys!

seriously… i would dig as many wells in africa and south america as i could so they can access clean water

i don’t need a bigger house, or fancy cars… and my kids’ educations are already paid for… i guess i could go for a bigger cottage… one with a granny suite next to it so family could visit but have their own space away from me!

edit… i would also open a trust fund for people like desmeran’s brother-in-law… reading that broke my heart… you are good people desmeran!

  3. well 10% I would defiently give to the church right away, I mean if I’m that blessed, then I would just have to or I would be afraid to spend any of it lol. I would get a big ole’ house too, around a 400,000 one on the lake with lots of room, and a class room so I could get personal tutors to come in for my kids. I would then pay off the debt that my parents are in, and the debt that my paretnt-in-laws are in. I would get a maid.. oh my goodness would I! lol and then my hubby and I wouldn’t have to work, so we could spend all our time with each other and our babies =) Then charity and savings (and maybe a boat lol) :sigh: thanks for making me dream a little bit.. now back to reality in our 2 bedroom house with our second baby on the way.. bills due.. lol Oh well, maybe some day I’ll get lucky and win the lottery..

  5. i would first to pay off the house and cars, we dont really need new ones, put aside 400,000 for kids future college (im 17, so i dont have kids, so i dont know how many im going to have or what schools their going too), maybe 200 for each person for new clothes (im just going to shoot high and estimate 6 people in the house, so 1,200) put the rest of that million in a savings account for emergencies, and give the other 3 million to various charities.

  7. Well after taxes, we’d probably have about 3.5-4 million dollars. 10% to the church right off the bat.

We’d pay off my inlaws’ mortgage and ours along with our other debt. We’d give our house to someone who needed it and move out to my inlaws’ place and build a larger, simple house (keep our same furniture and all). We’d put some away for the kids’ college.

Then we’d probably give the rest of it away to those who are in need or I would start up the Christian pregnancy resource center I’ve always wanted to to. Keeping it would be too risky because knowing us we’d end up blowing it on stupid stuff we don’t even need.

i have a severely disabled brother-in-law who will have absolutely no means of support when his parents can no longer support him. it keeps me up at night. i’d set aside some for a trust for him.

i’d give a big chunk away, probably largely to education-related charities, put some aside for education, pay off my house because debt makes me itchy, and then put the rest aside for when it’s needed. one thing we don’t need is more stuff.

  10. $4 million? Okay, here goes…
First I would quit my job. I would give 10% to my church off the top (400k), 50k to my parents and 25k to each of my brothers, and my husband’s parents and each of his siblings (300k), pay off what we owe on our house and cars (200k), invest at least half a million for future use (the kids college and retirement). Buy and furnish our dream home and dream cars (900k). The rest I would use for day to day living expenses without having to work. With a paid off home and cars, it would last at least 20 years until the 500k I invested takes over. Maybe even longer, without splurging.

Boyfriend would probably buy a new Mac computer, new Mac laptop and the Ipad, he is computer obsessed.
    I’d imagine a new car.

I think that would be it. Any left over would probably go into savings.

    1. Clear us of debt, factoring the mortgage in there that’s 150k done right there.
    2. Buy the house we’re hoping is still on the market back home when my husband leaves the Army.
    3. Assist selected family members with their own debt (I say selected as for a couple of them it would be enabling poor decisions).
    4. Donate the cars we have to Father Joe and replace them with new ones.
    5. Go on a little shopping spree and take a vacation.
    —->500k or so

We’d then invest much of what’s left for college, IRA’s, and a sizable savings account. There would also be money put away to ensure we’re able to care for our parents if needbe years down the road.

    -1.5mil or so

The remaining 2mil would go to charities or quite possibly towards starting our own charity/foundation.

I would buy a house for my parents and myself as well as cars for each of us. I would have about 25 million left Then I think I would open some sort of thing for the homeless people here and feed them and clothe them. I would like to do good for people, buy people food, cars, homes, etc. I so badly want to do that. I think I would also use a million to visit family around the world. I would also open a trust fund for my kids and put money away for their education and get my education and study something. Wow R28 Million is actually a lot of money.
